A social media campaign titled “I Recycle, Do You?” is being run by WasteNet Southland to celebrate Southland Recycle Week (November 16-22) with the aim of encouraging Southlanders to learn about recycling, take actions around home and work, and share their recycling experience with family and friends.

WasteNet‘s Senior Waste Officer Donna Peterson said the week was an opportunity for Southlanders to celebrate recycling.

“It’s been a hard year for recycling, with the Council’s 3-Strike Policy coming into force, so we felt it was time to give back to our committed recyclers and celebrate recycling” Ms Peterson said.

Ms Peterson said the campaign encourages people to offer a ‘recycling pledge’.

“In exchange for their pledge (or commitment) to recycle, the person goes into the prize draw for an iPad Mini, waste minimisation hamper, iRecycle T-shirts and other spot prizes.

“A dedicated Facebook page, iRecycle, has been set up where people can post photos of themselves recycling for more entries into the prize draw. We want people to use the page to ask questions and spark discussions around recycling in Southland and the different experiences they’ve had,” Ms Peterson said.

WasteNet created a short video clip showing what happens to recycling once it’s picked up by the collection truck, which can be found on the Invercargill City Council’s YouTube page, ICC TV, or on their website, www.icc.govt.nz.

Ms Peterson said it was going to be an exciting week for the WasteNet team, who would be out and about seeking recycling pledges.
