Close ties with Taizhou offer access to Chinese markets

Lower Hutt has renewed its memorandum of understanding with our sister city Taizhou, China. Both cities will develop mutual trade and economic development opportunities - specifically in education, new technologies and tourism.

Mayor Wallace and Taizhou Deputy Mayor Mr. He Rong signed the agreement on Thursday 21 April.  The Chinese delegation took the opportunity to visit several sites across the city including Callaghan Innovation where they discussed cooperation on health technology and medical research. Taizhou has a Medical City industry park, which aims to be China's leading medical high-tech zone. Renewable energy and advanced manufacturing were also areas of mutual interest.

The delegation was also treated to some iconic Kiwi experiences including an ice-cream at Days Bay beach and a meal of fish and chips. Our stunning Autumn weather made a great impression and allowed the delegation to enjoy some time outdoors.

Mayor Ray Wallace said, "Taizhou have been good friends of Hutt City for over a decade now and we're excited to have made this connection with local businesses and start-ups, giving them the opportunity to explore global markets.  With this new memorandum we look for to further discussion and establishing strong connections"

Taizhou is on the coast in China's Zheijiang Province. The population at the 2010 census was 5 968 838. Traditionally considered an agricultural area, it has recently gone through rapid industrialisation and economic growth.
