Cycling New Zealand today announced the world’s largest submarine sandwich chain, Subway® as the national sponsor for their regional performance hub programme.

The organisation has established a structured athlete development programme, with regional performance hubs as the cornerstones of the programme delivery.

Cycling New Zealand is working towards six regional road and track cycling hubs and two national performance hubs for Mountain Bike and BMX, with the overarching aim of systematically increasing the quality and quantity of riders across all cycling codes available to the Cycling New Zealand High Performance Elite Programme.

As well as providing training facilities and programmes for athletes, the six regional hubs will assist with the development of key regional coaches and provide a pathway for coaches as part of high performance succession planning.

Cycling New Zealand has already established regional Road and Track hubs in the Waikato-Bay of Plenty and Otago-Southland, as well as the Mountain Bike National Performance Hub based in Rotorua.
Andrew Matheson, CEO of Cycling New Zealand says:  “The hub programme is a great opportunity to provide emerging young talent a platform with consistent training and all the resources to take their riding to the next level.  The plan is to develop a growth pipeline to bring up and coming riders through the ranks and equip them with skills to compete on a national and international stage.

“At the recent Vantage Elite & U19 Track National Championships in Invercargill we saw this come to life with new young talent putting their hands up and footing it with the more experienced riders.

“Having great businesses like Subway in our corner means we can build momentum and create great coaching opportunities to fully develop these young riders.”

Adam Jackson, Country Director of Marketing for Subway® said the programme was a great fit for Subway®.

“Cycling is a sport which is entrenched in the Kiwi lifestyle and when the opportunity presented itself to jump on board with this new grass roots programme to develop the elite cyclists of tomorrow, we knew it was the perfect fit for Subway,” he said.

“The philosophy and intent of the programme has great synergy with Subway’s core brand values of promoting healthy, active living and it’s great to think that we’ll be making a real difference in the lives of so many talented young riders.”

Subway® restaurants first launched in New Zealand in 1994 and the brand now boasts over 270 stores throughout the country.  Subway® continues to grow, and is now a major part of Kiwi culture serving happy and healthy Kiwis from Cape Reinga to Tiwai Point.

“To secure an international sponsor like Subway is fabulous for our sport and with more hubs to be up and running this year, we are looking forward to the programme being in full flight in 2017,” Matheson says.
