Rio Olympians Set To Compete In Escape From Alcatraz™ Triathlon On June 11

XTERRA World Champion, IRONMAN 70.3 World Champion and More Round Out Field

SAN FRANCISCO – (April 24, 2017) IMG, the global leader in sports, events, media and fashion, today announced the pro field for the 2017 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon taking place on Sunday, June 11. Seven Rio Olympians will go head to head for this year’s title including Ben Kanute, Greg Billington, Katie Zaferes, Flora Duffy, Paula Findlay, Erin Densham and Barbara Riveros. The field will face strong competition from 2016 XTERRA World Champion Mauricio Mendez, 2016 IRONMAN 70.3 World Champion and 2016 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon Champion Holly Lawrence, six-time Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon Champion Andy Potts and many more.

“I’m excited to return to the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon,” said 2016 Rio Olympian Ben Kanute. “I raced last year for the first time, and it was probably the hardest course I have done. Every leg of the triathlon is challenging. The quality of the field is world class which creates an amazing atmosphere and makes everything about the race a challenge.”

“I can’t wait to defend my title at the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon this year,” said 2016 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon Champion Holly Lawrence. “Racing the course is the only way to prepare for this race. Top triathletes from around the world will take over the streets and waters of San Francisco for the 2017 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. Showcasing the beauty of San Francisco, triathletes will embark on a grueling 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz Island to the shoreline of Marina Green, an 18-mile twisting bike ride through the Presidio, and an eight-mile trail run out to Baker Beach and up the infamous 400-plus step Sand Ladder. Fans can experience the excitement at the Marina Green, where the swim exit, athlete transition area and finish line are easily visible. This bucket list triathlon will draw 2,000 racers from around the world.
