Nelson based fruit winery, Redwood Cellars, is popping the corks again after being recognised by an expert panel of 13 judges at the New World Wine Awards this month.

All wines entered in the competition had to be available in a commercial quantity (over 500 cases) and retail for under $25 in New World supermarkets on a day-to-day basis. Both Redwood’s Feijoa Still and Sparkling wines received Bronze medal awards judged under the international 20 point blind tasting system.

Of the 54 sparkling white wines entered, Redwood’s Sparkling Feijoa Wine, the only fruit entry, held it’s own against other grape varietals winning one of the16 bronze medals awarded: only 3 silver and 2 gold medals were awarded in this category.

Redwood Still Feijoa Wine was one of only 6 bronze medals awarded in its category, ‘Other White Wines NZ & Australia’, with only 1 silver or no gold awards being presented.

“We are extremely proud that our wines have been recognised as quality products. New Zealand’s wine industry produces wines of excellence and for fruit wines to be classed amongst them is a true testament to the winemaker’s skills here at Redwood Cellars.” said Scott Chapman, Director.

Feijoa wine is a refreshing change to traditional wines; light ivory in colour it has a distinct bouquet likened to ‘pineapple mixed with guava’ and reveals a sweet yet zesty tang to finish.

Winning wines will be featured in New World throughout the forthcoming year but to celebrate this success with the region both Feijoa Wines will be on Special at Redwood’s Cellar Door for the next month.
