Premier Mike Rann says he’s delighted that the UCI has confirmed that cycling superstar Lance Armstrong is eligible to make his comeback to professional road cycling at the 2009 Tour Down Under in Adelaide.

“We are thrilled that this issue has been resolved and Lance Armstrong will be coming to South Australia as planned.

“We congratulate the UCI and its President Pat McQuaid on making a great decision that allows Lance Armstrong to compete in the 2009 Tour Down Under in Adelaide.

Premier Mike Rann, Tourism Minister Jane Lomax Smith and Tour Director Mike Turtur have been involved in negotiations with UCI and Lance Armstrong’s management.

“We were quick off the mark and worked hard to secure Lance Armstrong’s involvement. When his participation was challenged we did not throw in the towel. We negotiated to resolve the issue,” the Premier said.

“Lance Armstrong’s decision to make his comeback to world cycling at the Tour Down Under is a world coup.

“Lance’s appearance at the Tour Down Under will leave a lasting legacy for the sport in Australia, encouraging more Australians to get on a bike and inspiring young Australians to be the champions of tomorrow.

“In addition, Lance’s positive messages delivered through the Livestrong Foundation will provide hope and support for thousands of Australians and millions of others around the world fighting cancer.

“He will be involved in a range of anti-cancer activities.

“We commend and support the UCI on their stringent approach to the rules of the sport and the due diligence with which they have resolved the issues around Lance Armstrong’s eligibility to compete at the 2009 Tour Down Under.

“This is fantastic news for South Australia, cycling enthusiasts and the general community who will benefit greatly from Lance’s cancer awareness campaign.

“We look forward to seeing this cycling superstar back on his bike and competing in the Tour Down Under in January.

“His participation will double the number of visitors and is expected to quadruple the worldwide television coverage. Mr Rann said.
