Single New Zealand women have been using rugby to grab men’s attention during the Rugby World Cup.

According to the latest data from online dating site FindSomeone a staggering 43% of females use the term “rugby” in their personal advertisement, putting them almost on par with their male counterparts at 46%.

Adding “Rugby” to female profiles has become a popular change over the last two months, and it has become a leading subject for online messaging.

“As Kiwi girls seek to catch Mr Right in an increasingly competitive market they are now baiting the hook with rugby,” said FindSomeone manager, Rick Davies. “And males seem to be taking the bait with messaging at its highest level in four months, and rugby-related conversation seven times more popular than usual.”

Hawke’s Bay was a big mover with almost half of all females from the province now citing rugby in their profiles. Conversely, Nelson Bay females have been largely unaffected by the Rugby World Cup festivities with almost no change, holding a national low with only 33% citing rugby.

“Overall, the proportion of females using rugby as a profile attractant is up 10% on last year,” Mr Davies said. “We think this is driven by the increasing number of women wanting to find someone special during the current man-drought, a situation made worse with so much attention on rugby at the moment.”

The “man drought” refers to the recent publishing of Statistics New Zealand 2011 population estimates which revealed there are more than 50,000 "excess" females aged 25-49 in New Zealand. However, the “man drought” doesn’t extend to the online dating world, with FindSomeone reporting 56% of their members as male.
