Losing 30 kilos in 30 weeks is a mammoth task for just about anyone, but that’s exactly what April Leremia set out to do earlier this year with her personal trainer, Scott Cottier, Director of the newly opened Specforce Gym in Newton, Auckland.

Now, as we near the end of the year, April has achieved what Scott believes to be her ideal weight (75kgs), but is determined to persist to her goal of 70kgs, which she believes she will reach by Christmas.

According to April, trainer Scott said “you’ll look like a ‘popsicle head’ if you go that far and you’re not gonna do it”, but that was like a “red rag to a bull” and she is determined to hit that mark, even if she then bounces back to a more comfortable 75kgs.

Having built an ever growing following throughout the year, April and Scott are thrilled
with the communal nature of the programme online, via a website and Facebook presence.

“There is a real feeling of support for each other that is cool to see”, says Scotty. “There will be people out there that actually want to do that (30kgs in 30 weeks), so if they wanted to do that, couldn’t afford to do it, they can do it with me online and my coach Scotty with Specforce, and he’s just brilliant!” adds April.

But who is this ‘Scotty’ and where did he, and Specforce, come from? Scott himself was a Physical Training Instructor for 13 of his 20 year engagement with the New Zealand Army. He recently finished his time as head trainer to the NZ Special Forces, before setting up his own gym. Together with colleague Dan Temple, the team have over 30,000 classes of experience between them and have worked with some of the country’s top sporting individuals and teams, like April.

The revolutionary Specforce training system brings the military model of training to the public for the first time and is designed to push you to a new level of fitness and mental discipline. Based predominantly around circuit training and using your own body weight for resistance, as opposed to lots of fancy, expensive machines, the Specforce programme provides a step up from conventional fitness and is allowing April and many more like her to reach their fitness and weight loss goals.

“There’s no magic formula to losing weight, just good nutrition, plenty of exercise and a belief that what you’re doing is making a difference. Hard work and persistence are the main ingredients needed for achieving results,” says Scott.
