A record 235 nominations have been received for The Dominion Post Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards 2012. The previous record was 214 nominations received in 2011.

These 235 nominations cover 38 different sporting codes from the traditional big players Rugby, Netball, Hockey, League, Athletics, Football and Cricket to smaller sports like Marching, Roller Derby, Free Diving, Orienteering and Speed Skating.

Event organiser Craig Ireson says this shows that sports are more engaged than ever and understand the importance of investing time in nominating their coaches, officials, players, volunteers and administrators. “Every regional sports organisation is made aware of the nominees within their code and this information can then be used by the code to celebrate their achievements within annual reports, websites, club functions and newsletters or through local media” says Craig.

The nominations are now sent to the judging panel, made up of well respected members of the sport and recreation sector, who will convene at the Sport Wellington offices on Wednesday 23 May. The finalist’s will then be announced in The Dominion Post on Friday 25 May. Winners will be announced at the awards dinner on Thursday 21 June at The Wellington Town Hall. Tickets for this event, a highlight of the Wellington sporting calendar, are on sale now at www.wellingtonsportsawards.co.nz, but be in quick the 2011 event sold out with a week to spare.
