Double Olympic medalist Bevan Docherty launched a new programme today – Docherty Dares - that challenges average kiwis to push the limits of their physical and mental capacity to achieve goals perhaps once perceived as out of reach.

Docherty was inspired to develop the programme after witnessing Christchurch man, Scott Kotoul, cross the finish line utterly exhausted at last year’s Round Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge.

“Scott was absolutely exhausted after completing half the course distance (80km) and said in his moment of pain to me that he was only going to do 40km next year.

“I thought it would have been a great shame for him to aim low, rather than aim high for next year’s event and so ‘dared him’ to enter the entire 160km course next year.

“But, there was a deal in there for Scott - if he agreed to enter, he could ride it on my Olympic bike!

“The challenge worked and it was amazing to see Scott transform from his state of exhaustion to complete excitement in a matter of seconds as he accepted the Challenge.”

As well as riding Docherty’s medal-winning cycle at next year’s Cycle Challenge, Kotoul will receive training and mentoring throughout the year to make sure he gets to the start line as well prepared as he can be.

Docherty invites any New Zealander who is prepared to push their boundaries to achieve big, to enter ‘Docherty Dares’ at www.docherty.co.nz

Docherty will personally choose participants, providing ongoing mentoring and training advice until the goal is achieved. Each challenger will also benefit from the support of Docherty’s sponsors, Avanti, Mizone Rapid, Air New Zealand, adidas and Blue Seventy.
