I Have Taken the Road Less Travelled- So Where Am I Now?

This phrase is not my own but was suggested to me as a description of my own feelings when I reached a crossroads a few weeks back. It fit perfectly. I have never been one to follow and am usually at my most fulfilled when blazing a new trail. However, this modus operandi has its drawbacks and one of them is sometimes finding oneself flat on one’s face (in a cow pat) and wondering how one got there.

We need to be clear on what our purpose is if we are going to head in the right direction in our personal and professional capacities. Success is about focus and to me focus comes with clarity of purpose. We spend a lot of time doing what we think others want us to do and many make the mistake, albeit well intentioned, of trying to please others at all times. Because we have no control over what others want and need this tends to leave us much like a feather in the wind, blowing this way and that, as the wind direction changes..

To fulfill any form of purpose, and I strongly believe that is why we are here, we need to get in touch with what we really want. We know inherently what that is and we are very aware of that feeling of inner contentment that comes when we sense that we are on purpose. Think of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela who were both under great duress from their governments due to the stand they took for their beliefs. Yet, despite this duress, they maintained an air of contentment and outwardly displayed an inner peace.

I would propose that this came from being on purpose. In other words, being on purpose doesn’t mean that your world is rosy and comfortable. It simply means that you have inner clarity about why you are here and where you are headed. In fact, in many cases it takes tremendous courage to follow a purpose, especially when you may need to swim upstream for a time or break away from other’s expectations.

Why not get in touch with your purpose? Taking some time out from the hectic pace of daily life and from all the places and people whose needs you fulfill, is all it takes. Spend some time thinking about what you want and why. Then think clearly about what you will need to do, to get what you want, and you can take the first step and plan your way forward. Once you take a direction you will quickly know if it feels right; and don’t underplay the accuracy of that inner feeling. Your inner voice comes directly from your subconscious mind which has the capacity to process information at a rate way beyond anything that your conscious mind can comprehend. It knows, and therefore you know.

So despite finding myself wondering where I am from time to time I do know when I am on purpose and I also know that it has been a challenging and downright frightening journey at times. My book, My Long Flight From Freedom, which tells my personal story was released this week in New Zealand. In this book I tell my story of growing up in, and ultimately making the decision to leave, South Africa, my home country. I invite you to visit my new website at www.sandygeyer.com where the book reviews are listed, the book video clip is loaded and the online ordering system ready to process orders.
