The 16th annual Peak to Powderkeg was an exceptionally chilly one this spring, with competitors enduring heavy rain and sleet as a part of the punishing ski/bike/run challenge.

First to complete the course was local competitor Kurt Eves, who, initially entered in the youth section, won the race with a time of just 33 minutes 15 seconds, placing him 1st in the open men’s division.

The event, held at the end of October, saw a smaller turnout than the record previous year, having been postponed twice due to poor weather conditions. Even so, 64 determined competitors took part in the race, including veteran Jon King who completed his 14th event this year. “It’s all about the beer at the end,” says the 56 year old who entered the very first competition in 1992.

The last leg of the course found competitors faced with the dubious challenge of sculling a beer - an evidently difficult task after 12km of pedaling – undoubtedly more rewarding at the barbeque and prize giving after heart rates had slowed.

All place holders received a 2010 Ruapehu season pass and Powderhorn voucher. Spot prizes included a Scott mountain bike, a pair of Canadian Club skis and tons of clothing and accessories.
