The Contact TriWoman Series is coming to Whangarei on Sunday 31st January and with the help of Northland’s own global triathlon star Sam Warriner, is set to inspire hundreds of women, many of whom will experience the thrill and camaraderie of a triathlon or duathlon for the first time while for others they will return for the second, third or perhaps fourth time.

The Marsden Point event is one of ten to be held throughout New Zealand this summer with the focus on New Zealand women participation rather than racing, with each made to feel like they are the centre of attention. Whangarei was selected to host an event because of its stunning location and the willingness of the local community to get in behind such an event.

Elite triathlete Sam Warriner will be there on the day supporting participants as they take part in her neck of the woods.

“Having a Tri Woman race in Whangarei is just fantastic and I can’t wait to be there to support all the ladies taking part. This is what our sport is about, inspiring all of us to participate and reach our own goals. I’ll be there to share in some of the joy and delight as women of all backgrounds and abilities feel the thrill of the finish line, knowing they have worked hard and achieved something special on the day. I just love days like this, it is a chance for me to give something back and offer advice to anyone who asks.”

Event Manager for Tri NZ, Adele Holmes says participants in the TriWoman Series are in for a treat.

“Women in Whangarei and the wider Northland region will be made to feel very special at the Marsden Point event. The Contact TriWoman is a non-competitive series that provides an opportunity for women of all ages, sizes, backgrounds and abilities to set their own goals and enjoy each others company on the day.

“TriWoman is not about lycra and flash bikes, it is a variety of triathlon and duathlon events designed for every woman in the community to set their own targets and achieve them with the help of friends, family and other participants.

“The team at Tri NZ will make each and every one of them feel like a champion in their own right. From the moment they enter to the moment they leave at the end of the day, this is about them and their own goals, their own motivation. Having someone like Sam Warriner there cheering participants on just adds to the occasion.”

The event is based at Marsden Point Beach with the course taking in Port Marsden Highway on the run and Marsden Bay Drive to One Tree Point on the bike with transition and race headquarters at Ralph Trimmer Road close to the beach. For those nervous about swimming a Duathlon option is available with participants encouraged to walk or jog the run section to suit their own fitness levels. The swim itself however is close to and on a course parallel to the beach so the water depth is never extreme and easily accomplished by even nervous swimmers.

Principal partner to Triathlon New Zealand, Contact Energy, emphasized their support for the sport through events such as the TriWoman Series.

“The Contact TriWoman Series offers another chance to experience the thrill of completing a Triathlon in a fun relaxed and encouraging environment and we are delighted to be involved,” said Craig Griffiths, Marketing Manager for Contact Energy.

The Contact TriWoman Series will visit ten locations from Whangarei in the North to Christchurch in the South. Each event offers a variety of short distance Triathlon and Duathlon events, with participants taking part on flat easy courses with swims in shallow water over no more than 300m in distance and bike rides of approximately 10km and a run of approximately 3km to finish.
