Wellington City Councillor, Celia Wade-Brown, will join Wellington divers on 15 May to clean up Taranaki Wharf.

A number of Wellington divers will take part in the Educate to Eliminate: Taranaki Wharf Clean Up.

Event Organiser, Steve Journeé, said “Not everyone realises that Wellington’s storm water drains end in the harbour. This means that anything which falls or blows out of your rubbish will most likely end up in the harbour or ocean. Unless you’re a diver you wouldn’t see the ugly mess this creates, which is why the Educate to Eliminate: Taranaki Wharf Clean Up is critical to educating the wider public about the importance of picking up their rubbish before it hits the harbour”.

Wellington dive shop, The Dive Guys, in association with Forest & Bird’s Blue Wellington group, Wellington Waterfront and several other supporters have joined forces to ensure this valuable exercise can occur. All divers have volunteered their time and The Dive Guys have supplied free hire of scuba gear.

A volunteer land based crew will also be based at Taranaki Wharf on the day to record and photograph all rubbish brought to the surface. The public are encouraged to watch from Taranaki Wharf and view the Educate to Eliminate: Taranaki Wharf Clean Up as it progresses.

Taranaki Wharf is a popular Wellington destination that attracts a wide range of users, including families, walkers, runners, kayakers, and many tourists enjoying one of Wellington’s finest attractions.
