Arguably New Zealand’s most popular triathlon, the Port of Tauranga Half has again sold out shortly after entries were opened this morning.

The individual field for the 22nd running of the triathlon at Mount Maunganui on 8 January next year, filled in only 58 minutes with team entries fully subscribed two hours after opening online at 10am this morning. Last year’s race also sold out quickly with more than 400 people on the waiting list.

Organisers, Sport Bay of Plenty said the continued support for the event and record time to sell out is remarkable and rewarding.

“We think it shows that despite challenging financial times, that if you have a quality product that is challenging and enjoyable then it will be supported. It is extremely satisfying to see so many people returning to the event year after year,” said Sport Bay of Plenty CEO, Wayne Werder.

“Our organizing team leaves no stone unturned to provide an excellent experience for everyone throughout the weekend. On top of that, Mount Maunganui is such a great spot to come especially in the summer whether you are participating or supporting”.

“This is a unique event where a world champion can line up on the beach alongside an age grouper who can take part as an individual or team.

“As a community organisation this event helps us raise the profile of our district, the sport of triathlon, and also sport in general with all profits going back to support sport in the local community.”

It will also form an official selection race for Triathlon New Zealand members for next year’s world long distance championships.
