Following a plethora of submissions from across New Zealand, Bio-Oil® has selected Napier-based Jan Klausen as the recipient of the first Bio-Oil® Post Natal Care Grant worth $4000.

Practicing midwifery, nursing and other health care professionals and students from both public and private sectors submitted comprehensive papers in the hopes of securing the inaugural Bio-Oil® Post-Natal Care Grant. The approach was broad and demonstrated the vast opinion and areas of interest in this burgeoning and in-demand specialty.

Midwife, Jan Klausen from Hawkes Bay Hospital submitted her paper with the view to utilise funds to develop a conference that focuses on the long term treatment of women with post-natal depression symptoms.

“Many women have come to trust the healing of their perinatal scars from using Bio-Oil®. However, for many mothers, psychological „scars lie hidden, sometimes for a lifetime from perceived trauma around their child's birth,” she says.

The Bio-Oil Post-Natal Grant® will enable Hawkes Bay health professionals to identify these women and provide pathways to recovery which are individual to each woman's needs.

"For women who suffer from the debilitating disorder of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, awareness of the condition is a huge part of the healing,” says Jan.

With plans to secure international guest speakers on the topic and with input from the Trauma & Birth Stress Consumer Group (TABS), the conference will bring together the perspectives of both medical professionals and women alike.

Plans are now underway for the post traumatic stress workshop, titled „Childbirth After-Thought to be launched in early 2011.
